What is Endoscopic Mucosal Resection?
Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) is a minimally invasive way to remove larger growths (polyps) from the digestive tract. It leaves no visible scars and usually no hospital stay.
Why is EMR performed?
EMR is the standard treatment for large, non-cancerous or early cancerous polyps (usually >20mm) in the colon, stomach, or oesophagus. It can prevent or cure early-stage cancers if they haven’t spread.
How do I prepare?
Colon: Bowel preparation (similar to a standard colonoscopy). Extended preparation may be required for better visibility.
Stomach/Oesophagus: Fasting (similar to a standard gastroscopy).
Your doctor may adjust or stop some medications (especially blood thinners, diabetes or weight loss medicines).
How is it done?
Using a flexible camera tube (endoscope) through the mouth or anus, your doctor lifts the lesion by injecting fluid underneath and removes the lesion with a snare. Clips may be used to close the area. Removed tissue is sent for testing.
YOUR RECOVERY
After the procedure
You’ll rest for 1–2 hours until sedation wears off.
You can usually go home the same day but must have someone drive you.
Mild bloating or discomfort is common and usually short-lived.
Avoid driving, signing documents, or drinking alcohol for 24 hours.
A repeat gastroscopy or colonoscopy to check for healing is generally required in 3-6 months.
Risks
EMR is safe when done by experienced specialists. Rarely, bleeding or a small tear in the bowel can occur, which may need further treatment, hospital admission for observation or surgery.
